CQ Marblehead Championships 2021 August 28/29

CQMclassfleet30 August 2021

Luck was on our side with Covid restrictions lifting in Queensland the week before the regatta, more might have attended if state borders were open, but that’s another story.

Saturday racing started with a quality field of 10 skippers, 7 of them willing to travel from SE Queensland for the chance to race the Fraser Coast entries on the Springs lake which was popular with the entrants with the control area being elevated. The day started with fine weather and an almost glassy lake and light SSW Zephyrs for the first 2 races made for some challenging conditions. By 11am the wind shifted Northerly up to about 8 knots and gave some great racing for the fleet.

After 17 races, Greg Torpy finished day 1 with a slender 3 point lead from Doug Allen, then a 17 points gap to Geoffrey Morris in 3rd place.

Sunday saw light NNW winds to start, which soon increased to 8-12 knots with storms passing to the south in the afternoon with racing finishing with some light rain.CQMclassWInners

With a total of 32 races and 5 discards, the top prize of 1st place went to Greg Torpy on 43 points, extending his lead from day one with Doug Allen in second place on 59 points. Geoff Morris managed a string of top placings on Sunday, but it was not enough to move up the rankings and finished the regatta in 3rd on 63 points. Also of note was the improvement in performance by Trevor Fisher, who improved from 8th, up to 5th over the second day of racing.

Extra prizes for highest finishing Masters went to Mark Beneke, also to Peter Watson for travelling so far but unable to finish the last few races due to damage.

A great thanks goes to those that organised the event including the FCRYC committee. Thanks also to those volunteers that helped run the regatta, including PRO David Laurie, Scorer David Black and helpers from our club, Kim, Darryn and Steve.

Fraser Coast Radio Yacht Club would like to thank all skippers attending for their good behaviour and look forward to hosting the next Marblehead event.
